Before 1792, Hai Choo Soo or "Sea Pearl Isle Temple” Tanjong Tokong was only a shrine for Tua Pek Kong. It was only in 1799 that a small temple was built. Later, funds were raised to build a brick temple with its back portion spanning the rocky cave.
The worship of Tua Peh Kong is an important religious matter in Penang. At the turn of the 20th Century, Tua Peh Kong became so popular that there were recrimations between the Hokkien Community on the one hand and the Hakka and Cantonese on the other, over the privilege of paying homage to the deity on specific days at the Temple. This was settled peacefully by letting the Poh Hock Seah pay homage to Tua Peh Kong on the 14th and 15th day of the Chinese First Moon.
The “Hai Choo Soo” Tua Pek Kong Temple is sited at Tanjong Tokong because it stands on a good “Feng Sui” site. It is a Chinese belief that temples standing on a geomantically favoured site will bless all its devotees who appeal for assistance and advice.（compiled by Lim Hun Swee & Lim Eng Gim）
