Cheng Huang Ye (literary “God of the Moat and the City Walls" or “God of the Boundary”) is commonly known as the City God. He is a tutelary deity, or a group of deities, in Chinese folk religion who is believed to protect the people and the affairs of a particular locality, such as a city, town or village. The belief of Cheng Huang Ye has been evolving since more than 2000 years ago.
The City God is believed to respond to communal concerns such as prayers for rain. He may also respond to requests of a personal nature such as prayers for recovery from illness. Town residents may also appeal to him for help in a natural disaster or other crisis. Cheng Huang Ye may also be called upon to help those who are accused of crimes. The accused appear before the god and ask for a sign to help prove their innocence.
The 24th of 7th lunar month is the feast day of Cheng Huang Ye.
